African Openbills: a first for Cape Town!

African Openbill - first records for Cape Town! © Otto Schmitd.African Openbills, Anastomus lamelligerus, had never been recorded in Cape Town. But earlier this year, the first ever record appeared.

Guide Otto Schmidt went out on a Birding Africa day trip from Cape Town on 25 February 2010 and photographed this exceptional sighting!

    As a visitor from Kzn who is down in Cape Town to run the Two Oceans, I was pleasantly surprised to spot an Openbill roosting in a pinetree opposite the Steenberg Golf Estate in Tokai on 30 March 2010.
